Now I just have to forget all 5 of my favorite openings 😢
I briefly played the Ruy Lopez thinking it wins a pawn not knowing about Qd4 lol
Aren't there variations of the English where white plays Ne2?
15:30 I've got a question for Levy: Why is it every chess coach I've ever encountered advocates for playing the open games first before moving on to system openings? They all say system openings stunt your chess growth if you try to start off approaching the openings that way. You need open, tactical games to get the most benefit when learning.
Alternate title:
4 openings You're too stupid to understand
Mu favourite opening is the F you gambit, where you leave the queen the fifth rank, and after a bishop takes, you basically resign
as a 900 the opening doesn't really matter because you're gonna blinder the queen somewhere down the line and rage resign anyway
You've said these things for several years but it took me 3,5 years before I believed you.
Anyone sees a striking resemblance with the Catalan when Levy mentioned Grünfeld and the c5 pawn break?
The only opening I have played with white to get from 800 to 1100 was the Ruy Lopez, so when that was the first opening and you said that it was too difficult I got a little upset, but when you then said: "I am not saying that you should stop playing this if you are up for the challenge and like the opening, I am saying there are better alternatives" I was like… "Damn that sounds good actually". Great inspirational video as always Levy!
since watching i have learned almost every line there is for the Ruy López
You can't play the dragon without knowing what you're doing – you'll be eviscerated by the Yugoslav attack.
Ive had a lot of succes with the sicilian dragon and im 800
And now? A list of recommended openings for both sides? 🤗
Great! Thanks for your videos. A few days ago my six year old son asked me to teach him chess, which I was glad to do. I then fancied learning a bit more and found your videos. You do a great job of combining education with entertaiment. Well done
The echo in this video is unbearable :S
I think its a personal thing. I love weird hyperaggressive openings, where the engine thinks im 1-2 pawns down after 2 moves, if my opponent defends correctly for 20 moves in a row, but i also got a friend who really loves super positional stuff like the English or Grunfeld, even without tons of theory, just slowly improving pieces move by move. Id rather take a few years, to learn a super complicated 1000 theory line opening, the games resulting of which i enjoy 8/10 times, than take a month to memorize like 50 lines of a easy opening, that results in all kinds of positions that i don't enjoy playing.
My favorite opening for black is the karo cann. Even when they play d4 I still win.
Should I play najdorf Sicilian with 1530 FIDE ELO?
I saw the grunfeld in the miniature and i was ready to comment that you are wrong but at the end you rectified haha. From my point of view you can play a tactical game agains someone prefer positional game, also i would say i gain 10% of my games in the 10 first moves ( i am just 1700 elo ) but also i know this opening will be useful at all levels, if one day i reach 2000 or 2200 it will still be a fantastic option instead of learning a new repertory each time i improve 150 elo points.
Thanks for the English opening tips, now I'll play it more efficiently. 👍
How about the tarkatower indian defense against a queens gambit
let’s goo 1.g3 remains under the radar
This is a really good video idea, thank you!
Remember " Anything free is almost a danger lurking in dark🌑
I love your videos dude
I was 800 in rapid and played ruy lopez and after 2 months i was 1200 but now in 1300 it aint working for me often
If you are less than 1500 do not learn the French. I bought a Chessable course and have spent the last month learning hundreds of variations. It’s fun enough to play, but too much to study.
wearing a wife beater? really unbecoming
GothamChess is the best! ♟
levy: asks me if i know how to play against any opening
me: 😥😥
Reti prevents e5, but English prevents d5, it's an equal tradeoff, and after Nf3 Nc6 (forced) c6 d5 is not even possible
As black when encountering the queen's gambit, I generally play the queen's gambit declined. I have 80% win rate, especially if it leads to a queen trade. But, I learned that opening as a kid and so, even though I stopped playing chess for 30+ years, I think the muscle memory is still there.
I like Levy, but he lost my confidence in this video very early on. I think that the criteria he set forth are good for some players and terrible for others. Let me explain.
Complex openings are to be avoided by those who are not ready for the complexity. They are absolute jewels for those who are good at dealing with complexity and have put in the effort to learn at least the most common lines, accounting for, say, 90% of the games with that opening. To look at it another way, complexity will reward one player at the expense of the other. For me, I would rather be the one who comes out on top. I do prefer the Italian or the Scotch to the Ruy Lopez, but it is not because I am scared off by the numerous variations. I do play it sometimes, though. I just like the lines of the other lines better. And the Ruy Lopez definitely does not meet his third criterion in any case. It is among the most common openings in chess. Expect to see it often, which means that you should study the opening at the very least so you can play it as black. And the more you know about how to play it as black, the better you should be able to play it as white. And while Levy claims that white loses to the Marshall Attack "like 70% of the time" (the actual figure in the Lichess database is 56%), the engine also shows that white is ahead. So why does white lose? Simple: black chose that line because he is versed on it, and white may not be. Rather than avoid it, the lesson should be learn it!
Next, Levy goes to say that you need a defense against the Berlin defense. Well, white wins 51% and loses 44%, so Levy seems to be going against his own criteria to try to make his case. He goes against his frequency of occurrence criterion next, mentioning Qf6. That happens 2% of the time after you enter the Ruy Lopez, and white has a 7% win advantage over black in that line as well. We all know when the queen comes out early, you develop your pieces by attacking the queen, right?
I'll stop here, and I will watch the rest of the video. If I see things that he convinces me on, I will come back with an edit to mention it, but I don't hold out too much hope that he will discourage me from anything I am already playing.
Having watched the rest of the video, I will say that I already avoid the others he mentioned. I do play the Zukertort (Nf6) against 1.d4, but it can easily transpose into a queen's gambit, which I always decline. It's not a line I have studied, but I have read enough to convince me not to try to play it as black. And my favorite d4 opening as white isn't the queen's gambit either, so I don't even have any urgency to study it for white.
Controlling the centre early is paramount
Has anyone played against you meme openings?
Motivated me to learn the defenses for Ruy Lopez
so if il play vs gm, sicilian najdorf, il be in a lots of trouble, because i don't know all variants? Its really a problem vs my <1000 elo chesscom oponents😂😂
as a 1600, do urself a favour and play the budapest
i heard "skibiti defence"
Me, who's won all my queens gambit accepted games as black: 🧍♂️
A lot of what you show as bad, "and then they go here…" is me naturally following advice of developing the center and then castle. 😮
chess cunttttent ?
is this a sect thing ? all YouTubers MUST have a thumbnail with they symbol of putting the index intron their mouth ? cn you illuminate me on this subject ? why is that everyyyyyyyy YouTuber has this thumbnail ?
I just started with london 🙁
I highly recommend the Italian for lower ratings. I had a ton of fun playing it in scholastic tournaments, and I won about half of my games because my opponent didn't understand the fried liver. Good times.
The other game I play is Xiangqi and opening theory there is absolute madness. Apparently there are some openings only very old grandmasters play because it takes like 50 years to learn all the lines lol
I play the grunfeld every time I play black. I'm a 1500.
Unless I blunder in a major way, I win against similarly skilled players.
Ruy lopez-no scotch, spanish, italian
1:22. Absolutely crushed my confidence. Playin Rui Lopez Since I was 800. But honestly you are right. I win more game with black than white which is a rarerity. Around 60% win with black(caro-kann) and with white rui lopez 57% and the major reason is. I don't know what to do in the long term. I give them the opportunity to develope and play I get the same I don't really get an advantage. I am 1200 so noone knows berlin or martial. But still if they play normally. I don't really get any attack. Since, it is very positional and I am not that good. I tried to learn all the main lines but still unclear. But I will continue with rui lopez though.
